Céladon is the name of the lovelorn shepherd in a sixteenth-century romance from france, l'astrée, which was immensely popular in its time. The pale green that céladon loved to wear became all the rage in france at the same time as a similarly colored, traditional ceramic from china was being imported into europe for the first timeand that is how the ceramic got its name.
That chinese ceramic was made to resemble the precious jade, and that is why my handmade celadon watercolor paint actually has genuine jade in italong with synthetic malachite and a touch of sap green from rome's historic art shop, poggi. I hope you will enjoy painting with it celadonite, by the way, is the name of a naturally occurring green mineral, which i have made into paint before, but which is not present in this particular paint i named céladon.
